X (Twitter) video won't download? Reasons and fixes

Most public X videos save in a few seconds. When one doesn't, there's almost always a clear reason. This guide explains the common ones, how to recognise them and what you can try.

As always, only save videos you own or have the creator's permission to save.

1. The account is protected or private

If the person has protected their posts, only approved followers can see them. VidYoink only looks up public posts, so it shows “This video appears to be private or no longer available.” There's no workaround. Please ask the creator to send you the video directly.

2. The post was deleted

Deleted posts and suspended accounts can't be reached. Open the link in your browser: if X says the post doesn't exist, the video is gone.

3. The post links to a video somewhere else

Some posts show a preview card for a video hosted on another website. That video isn't stored on X, so there's no X video file to save, and VidYoink shows “No video found at this link.” Look for a video that plays inside the post itself, with the X player controls.

4. It's a live broadcast or a Space

Live video broadcasts and audio Spaces aren't regular video posts and can't be saved while they're live. Some broadcasts are posted as a normal video afterwards. If so, please use that post's link.

5. The content is age-restricted or marked sensitive

X hides some videos behind a sensitive-content warning or an age check that requires being logged in. VidYoink doesn't log in to X, so these posts can't be looked up.

6. A temporary error

Sometimes X is slow or briefly limits requests. VidYoink then says X isn't responding right now, or that there are too many lookups at once. These errors usually clear on their own.

7. The link isn't a post link

VidYoink needs the address of a single post, which contains /status/ followed by a long number, for example x.com/username/status/1234567890. Links to a profile, a search, a list or the home timeline don't point to one video. Open the post itself (tap its text or timestamp) and copy that link instead. Links starting with twitter.com work just as well as x.com.

What to try

  1. Open the link in your browser and check the video plays without logging in.
  2. Copy the link again using Share → Copy link, so you have the post's own address.
  3. Wait a minute and try again if VidYoink says X isn't responding.
  4. If the post has several videos, VidYoink lists each one as Video 1, Video 2 and so on.
  5. If the video opens in a player instead of saving, please use your browser's download or save option.

Quick questions

Do GIFs work?

Yes. X stores GIFs as short video files, so VidYoink saves them as MP4.

Why are the quality labels like 720p?

The label is the video's shorter side, so a tall phone video that's 720 pixels wide is labelled 720p.

Will logging in help?

VidYoink never asks for your X login and only works with public posts.
